State memorial service held for former Speaker Joe T. San Agustin

A state memorial service was held for the late former Speaker Joe T. San Agustin at the Legislature Wednesday morning.

The former senator died on Thursday morning, April 15.

He was first elected senator in 1976 and was re-elected 9 times afterward, beginning his final term in 1994.

He also served as Speaker for the 20th 21st and 22nd Guam Legislatures.

He was married to Carmen Shimizu San Agustin and they have five children, including Senator Joe S. San Agustin, who serves as a member of the 36th Guam Legislature.

At the memorial service, Senator Amanda Shelton read a resolution recognizing the former speaker. Tyrone Taitano, director of the Bureau of Statistics and Plans, delivered the eulogy.

After serving in the Guam Legislature, he served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the GovGuam Retirement Fund.

A long-time Democrat, he served as chairman of the Democratic Party of Guam from 1997 to 2001.
