Guam – Thanks to Title V-A Consolidated Grant and ARRA federal funds, the Judiciary of Guam in partnership with the Guam Department of Education will host a one-day Play by the Rules™ (PBR) training workshop on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 27 and 28.
The workshop is aimed at expanding the highly praised, law-related education program into the high schools and update school staff with changes made to juvenile law since the book’s first publication in 2009. Laws, such as those on the drinking age, bullying, sexting, and cyberbullying have since been amended or added by Guam senators. Participants will include public and private school teachers, counselors, juvenile justice and youth service providers such as Judiciary Probation Officers and Sanctuary.
The Judiciary and GDOE have successfully immersed thousands of middle school students and other youth into Guam law and civics through the acclaimed, interactive program. Chief Justice F. Philip Carbullido states, “PBR is a fine example of how the Judiciary takes a proactive role in successfully teaching our students to become law-abiding young citizens in the hope of preventing them from entering our juvenile court system – already bursting at the seams”. He added, “Play by the Rules is a truly dynamic way to teach our island children about the law in an enjoyable manner.”
Play By the Rules is an innovative national education program that teaches youth about laws through a curriculum of best practices proven to prevent youth crime. The program is currently being taught in most 7th grade classrooms across the island, I Famagu΄on-ta, the National Guard’s Counterdrug Task Force’s Camp Freedom summer program, and the Judiciary’s probation and client services programs.
