Guam – Naval Base Guam this afternoon welcomed the arrival of the Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine USS Key West which now calls Guam its home port.
USS Key West joins the 3 submarine force on Guam, replacing USS Buffalo which will finalize its transition from Guam and change its home port to Hawaii in early 2013.
Forward deployed submarines are readily capable of meeting global operational requirements. Guam’s strategic location enhances military force flexibility. Its location allows freedom of action, regional engagement, crisis response and deterrence while helping to fulfill commitments to U.S. allies and partners to protect our nation’s security.
Commander, Joint Region Marianas, Rear Adm. Tilghman D. Payne, spoke at the arrival ceremony along with Commander, Submarine Squadron Fifteen, Capt. Scott A. Minium, and USS Key West Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Curtis P. Duncan.
Family and friends welcomed the Key West pier side.
