DOE PARTNERS WITH THE GUAM ASSOCIATION FOR CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION TO OFFER 3RD ANNUAL TEACHER CAREER DAY

The Guam Association for Career and Technical Education, Inc. in collaboration with the Guam Department of Education (GDOE) Curriculum & Instruction Division will host a “Teacher Career Day” for roughly 104 teachers from Tiyan High School on Monday, February 3, 2020. Typically, career day events are for students. However, this unique career day event for teachers will help educators network and learn from industry professionals about the education and skills needed for the future workforce.

The Teacher Career Day will bring together industry representatives to help bridge the gap between educational institutions and employers. The event provides a forum for participants to discuss employment opportunities in various Guam industries, understand the knowledge and skills expected of employees, and learn what high school subjects are important for workplace readiness in these industries.

The Guam chapter of the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) was incorporated in May 2017 and is a part of the largest national education association in the United States dedicated to ensuring that all students are positioned for career success. The Guam ACTE has conducted two career day events for teachers in recent years, including at Simon Sanchez High School in 2018 and Jose Rios Middle School in 2019.

The upcoming event will have three consecutive series of 40-minute breakout sessions on topics such as transportation, retail and sales, hospitality and travel, healthcare, and construction and maintenance. Industry partners participating in this year’s even include the Guam Regional Transit Authority, American President Lines, DoCoMo Pacific, University of Guam School of Business, New Horizons, Pacific Human Resource Services, ASC Trust, Outrigger Hotel, Dr. Kabob, Hard Rock Café, Sagua Managu/Marianas Physicians Group, Guam Urology, NAVFAC, Black Construction and Barrett Plumbing.

The event is scheduled to take place on Monday, February 3, 2020 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Tiyan High School.
