Teacher and former Capuchin friar accused again of sexual abuse


Vernon Kamiaz allegedly raped a 15-year-old boy back in 1983.

Guam – The latest sex abuse lawsuit filed in District Court is the second one to name a Capuchin brother and current Guam Department of Education teacher Vernon Kamiaz.

The 106th lawsuit to be filed against the Archdiocese of Agana, C.J.I., who’s now 50 years old alleges he was sexually abused in 1983 when he was about 15 years old.

It was after youth fundraiser event when Kamiaz allegedly drove C.J.I. to his mother’s residence and raped him. C.J.I. is being represented by Attorney David Lujan and is seeking $5 million in damages.

Meanwhile, Kamiaz is still listed on Simon Sanchez High School’s website as a science teacher. However, GDOE Superintendent Jon Fernandez clarified that Kamiaz was reassigned at the beginning of the school year to the Division of Curriculum and Instruction which is located at GDOE’s headquarters in Tiyan.
