Governor signs agreement launching unemployment program for those laid off by pandemic

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero Sunday signed an Agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor  to implement the provisions of the Relief for Workers Affected by Coronavirus Act.

The Act provides for a new Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, giving employees affected by the COVID-19 pandemic on Guam unemployment benefits.

Congressman Micheal San Nicolas in his statement last week said the act could provide up to $930 a week for everyone who has become unemployed or furlough as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Guam Department of Labor and the Guam Economic Development Authority will be leading efforts to create a new PUA program that will be administered by the Guam DOL.

To ensure compliance with the Governor’s social isolation directive, the program will be sensitive to existing social distancing mandates.
