The CNMI Governor has renewed his request to establish a National Guard unit in the CNMI.
CNMI Governor Ralph Torres announced in a media briefing his request for a National Guard unit in the CNMI. He says aside from American Samoa, the CNMI does not have its own unit.
Whether it’s an Air or Army National Guard, Torres says it is time for the CNMI to prioritize this, not just to enhance support for disaster response but also for local and regional security.
Last year, Torres asked the National Guard Bureau to consider his request for Guard presence in the CNMI in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic.
Torres noted the importance of having a National Guard unit that can assist local first responders and deployed federal personnel in effectively responding to this pandemic as well as future natural disasters.
Torres added that health and public safety personnel and resources are being stretched to the limit in the CNMI.
He says he hopes to get an update in the coming months.
