October is National Bullying Prevention Month and members of Untalan Middle School’s READi Club gathered outside of their campus Friday as part of a wave to celebrate Unity Day, a bullying prevention event.
Standing for Rainbow Education Alliance for Diverse Individuals, the READi Club’s purpose is to celebrate diversity within the community whether it’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or ethnicity, which is one of the reasons why they organized the wave.
“Usually, people who are bullied are different. Which is why we’re celebrating Unity Day to promote acceptance. This year’s motto or theme is to choose kindness, acceptance, and inclusion,” Pagsanjan said.
According to club officers Ryan Santos and Dante Carino, the event was a success.
“It was very empowering! Like, stand up against bullying! Like Dante said, it was very empowering and great to see people stand up against bullying for everyone,” Santos said.
As for Agnes Guerrero, the school’s principal, the event was a way to show the island to celebrate the members of our community.
“We’re one island. One community. We need to be together. Diversity is strength and strength is unity,” Guerrero said.
