Guam – Retired UOG Professor Dr. Dirk Ballendorf died in his sleep at his home early Monday morning. He was 73 years old.
Dr. Ballendorf was an internationally recognized scholar on Micronesia.
His daughter, and GWA Communications Director, Heidi Bellendorf , tells PNC News that he passed away quietly following a long illness. Funeral arrangements are pending.

According to the Guampedia website, Dr. Ballendorf was the author of 11 books, and over 200 articles and reviews on Micronesian history and culture. And Dr. Ballendorf served as the Director of UOG’s Micronesian Area Research Center from 1979 to 1984 and again from 2004 to 2007.
He earned an EdD in planning and administration from Harvard University in 1973 and holds an MA in history from Howard University in Washington, D.C. and a BS from Pennsylvania State College at West Chester, according to Guampedia.
