The University of Guam on Sunday presented two $1000 scholarships to two UOG Triton Soccer players in honor of James Whippy, the former UOG Men’s Soccer Coach who won four Guam Football Association’s Championships in the early 1990s. The late Coach Whippy was being placed into the UOG Athletic Hall of Fame on Sunday in the UOG Calvo Field House as part of the Hall of Fame Reception and Basketball game. The scholarships were given to the returning players with the highest GPAs on the UOG soccer teams.
The two soccer players were Koholali’i M. Maertens for the women’s team and Shashikant Kotwal for the men’s team. Both students have over a 3.50 GPA. UOG Men’s and Women’s Soccer Coach, Rod Hidalgo, made the announcement of the winners at the Hall of Fame Reception.
Helen Whippy, wife of James Whippy and former UOG Senior Vice President, was at the event and gave the scholarships to the players. Her son, James Whippy, was also in attendance. The Whippys started a scholarship fund in honor of Coach Whippy in the UOG Endowment Foundation when he passed away in July of 2007.
UOG President, Dr. Thomas W. Krise, and UOG Endowment Foundation Executive Director, Melanie Mendiola, were in attendance at the event as well.
