Electrical Fire at UOG Field House; Welding Mishap Ignites Blaze at Oka Towers


Guam – (Tuesday, Nov. 5) – An electrical fire at the UOG Field House this morning has knocked out power to the facility.

But officials say there was no serious structural damage, and no injuries.

UOG Spokesman Jonas Macapinlac told PNC News there was a “brown out” about 11:30am,  followed by a  fire in an electrical panel at 11:45am. Students and staff were evacuated from the Field House.

The fire caused a temporary loss of power to the entire UOG campus.  However Macapinlac says backup generators kept power on to most buildings. The University was back on full GPA power by 2pm, however power remains out at the Field House.  [read the UOG release below].

Classes scheduled to be held in the Field House have have been cancelled for today.

Guam Fire Spokesman  Lt. Phil Camacho says that GFD got a 911 call just before noon reporting ” heavy smoke at UOG Field House.”

As of 12:15pm he said the fire was under control and confined to the maintenance room. He called the fire “electrical in nature”  adding that an investigator is at the scene to determine the exact cause.


GFD also put out a fire on the 12th floor of one of the empty Younex towers out on Oka Point. Lt. Camacho says that some workers who were welding when they accidentally ignited some building materials. The fire was quickly extinguished.

No one was injured and there was no serious damage, however fire inspectors did site the contractor for failing to have the proper permit for the work they were doing.

UOG Field House Update

Around 11:45am this morning, the University of Guam campus experienced loss of power due to an electrical panel catching on fire at the Field House.  

Employees and students were evacuated immediately and no one was injured.  The Guam Fire Department responded by noon, and by 12:30pm the situation was under control.  Guam Power Authority and UOG personnel are assessing repairs.  

Power was restored to most of the University campus by 2pm, while the Field House is still without power.  The Field House will be closed until further notice.  Please check the UOG website (www.uog.edu) for updates.

Classes will take place as scheduled.  However, classes scheduled to be held in the Field House have have been cancelled for today.
