The University of Guam’s 59th Student Government Association is hosting the second annual “Tritons Out Loud” event for the first time virtually.
The “Tritons Out Loud” Diversity Day event showcases diversity, inclusion, and the equity of UOG students by showing their many talents.
Because of the pandemic, UOG 59th SWA Senator and chairperson Kyona Rivera tells PNC about the ways they got students to show their talents on their event’s online platform.
“We asked students to gather video or send a video of their talents. It could be singing, dancing, painting, doing a magic act, or anything in general … anything they want to showcase. We also ask students who own small businesses to feature their products or their service and send a 60-second video and showcase what service or business they have,” Rivera said.
Adding to the theme of diversity, the UOG SWA senators also want to show that no matter what background the students came from, they have so much to offer.
D’Marco Quinene, UOG SGA co-chairperson, said: “We wanted to showcase unique talents. So diversity … the inclusion of people and ideas. We wanted to show off that our Tritons are not just students, they’re business partners, they’re also successful workers right now. They are thinkers, movers, shakers and we wanted to highlight that with our Tritons Out Loud event, it’s not just for the small businesses but for their ethnic backgrounds, for all of the other talents they have that might not be school or business-related. We wanted to show that UOG is not just a collective of students doing school work.”
Rivera added: “It’s very interesting to see because these small businesses actually came up in quarantine or since the pandemic.”
Special guest speakers for the event include Larry Mallari from the MTV reality show, MTV Following: Bretman Rock; Vincent Reyes, Master of Dance and Director Inetnon Gef Pa’go; and FSM Consul General Teresa Filepin.
