April Alice Barzanti has received the Overseas Volunteer of the Year award from the United Service Organizations, commonly known as the USO.
She received the award during a ceremony at the USO office in Tumon Tuesday last week.
Barzanti was selected from among 30,000 global USO volunteers. She has spent about 2,500 hours volunteering Monday through Friday over the past two years.
She said much of her time has been spent on a program that connects service-members with their families and partners.
“It’s something I’m very passionate about which is about connecting military in relationships and stuff. Guam is very far from the United States, so its very important for me that you be able to connect with your partners. This is what my program specifically was about,” Barzanti said.
Barzanti is originally from England. She married a member of the U.S. military and the couple has been stationed on Guam since December 2017.
