Early Friday morning, Vice Speaker Tina Rose Muña Barnes presented her policy initiatives to the Biden Harris Administration’s Senior Economic Advisor.
In the virtual meeting with Lukas McGowan, Senior Adviser – White House Intergovernmental Affairs, Muña Barnes emphasized the importance of Guam’s economic recovery, specifically as it relates to federal policies that need to be amended to support Guam’s efforts.
As the Chairwoman of the Committee on Regional Affairs and the Guam Buildup, Muña Barnes focused her conversation on the potential for economic initiatives as it relates to the Blue Continent.
Throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic, Muña Barnes had engaged in dialogue with Speakers from all over the Pacific – many of whom supported her initiative to look at an alternative to the current shipping capabilities within our region.
After an analysis of Pacific Shipping during COVID-19 that was done by the United Nations and the World Bank, these studies present an opportunity for Guam to become a regional shipping hub for the Pacific.
In her conversation Friday, Muña Barnes made the case that this would benefit the livelihoods of all those who call this Blue Continent home by allowing greater access to commodities and trade, but also create a new industry on Guam, create more local jobs, as well as the potential of lowering the cost of living on Guam by promoting cheaper competitive rates for shipping.
Over the next several months, the Biden Administration will be working on initiatives that center around the four following topics: COVID-19, Economic Recovery to Build Back Better, Racial Justice and Equity, Energy and Climate Policy.
The initiatives presented Friday were in line with the four priorities of the Biden Administration and both parties will continue the partnership to Build Back Better.
“We must leave no stone unturned, doing all we can to lift up our People, our Economy and our Island. I am grateful for the support from the Biden Administration and will continue to do my part for the sake of our Island” stated Vice Speaker Muña Barnes.
