Vice Speaker Proposes Requiring Elected Officials Prove They’ve Paid Their Taxes

Guam -Vice Speaker B.J. Cruz has introduced a measure that would require all elected GovGuam Officials prove they have paid their taxes before they run for public office.

If passed, Bill 31-31 would require that individuals running for elected Public Office obtain a Tax Clearance to qualify for candidacy.

A release from the Senator’s Office quotes him as saying:

“By passing this legislation, we can show all the people of Guam that we are worthy of their trust. We must lead by example. We can’t be pushing the Department of Revenue and Taxation to pursue delinquent tax payers, or require businesses to clear annually to get licenses, if we as lawmakers cannot follow the law and pay our required taxes.”
