Guam – The Guam Judiciary this afternoon formally awarded its 2014 Hustisia Award to Attorney Joaquin C. Arriola, Sr.
The Hustisia award is given annually, in conjunction with law week activities, to a recipient who has contributed to improving the administration of justice and good government on island.
Guam Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Torres praised Arriola for his long and distinguished service to the people of Guam.
Arriola’s has been practicing law on Guam for 57 years, and he is still practicing today, at the age of 88.
About Joaquin C. Arriola, Sr.:
Joaquin C. Arriola, Sr., whose legal career has spanned some 57 years, served as Speaker of the Ninth and Tenth Guam Legislatures. He has additionally served as counsel to the Guam Legislature, Guam Power Authority and the Guam Economic Development Authority. Mr. Arriola has served as an Associate Justice pro tempore for the Guam Supreme Court and continues to be active in the practice of law as the founding partner of Arriola, Cowan & Arriola.
Mr. Arriola is a graduate of George Washington High School, the College of Saint Thomas (now known as the University of Saint Thomas), and the law school at the University of Minnesota. Mr. Arriola is a member of the Guam Bar Association (including having served as president from 1956-57), as well as the American, International, and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Bar associations. He is admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the United States District, Supreme, and Superior Courts of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.
About the Hustisia Award:
The Hustisia honor recognizes community members who have promoted respect for the law and an understanding of the judicial system, encouraged civic responsibility and service and volunteered time and talents to judicial system in serving the people of Guam. Mr. Arriola will be honored at a ceremony on Friday, May 2, 2014, at 3:00 pm at the Guam Judicial Center in conjunction with the swearing in of new members of the Guam Bar Association.
