Guam- Family members of the 1st Battalion, 294th Infantry Regiment hosted a candlelight vigil for their deployed soldiers at the Guam National Guard’s Barrigada Readiness Center.
The synchronized vigil with their loved ones was conducted last Friday night through the magic of technology. The Guardsmen were training at Camp Shelby before they deployed to Afghanistan.
Jing Matagolai says she and her family were touched by the ceremony. She mentions she continues to keep her husband Ryan and the battalion in her prayers as they serve the country overseas.
“It’s really touching,” said Matagolai. “I cried when they started playing the song. And it’s a really good thing because I was really praying for them as they enter Afghanistan.”
About 600 soldiers from the battalion left Guam last month and will be deployed for about one year. This is the largest deployment in the history of the Guam Guard.
