Guam- The Guam Unique Merchandise and Arts (GUMA) Program is featuring “Absolutely Guam!”, An Island Exposition through June 1 at the DFS Galleria in Tumon.
DFS Galleria Senior Manager Francis Guerrero says GUMA is an incubator program that was designed to take local cultural producers through a special training process with the hope of making them into sustainable businesses. The program launched in October of last year and was met with a high level of interest. He also says the expo at the DFS Galleria is meant to test market product concepts and give their 17 participants exposure to visitors and gain feedback from customers.
“The goal was to be able to have people that can produce things that are truly Guam and be able to show off what Guam’s got,” said Guerrero. “There are some incredibly talented people out there so the interest level is very high. We took applications from there and we had 16 applicants. Of them, we selected 4 awardees that we will take from start to finish with the hope of graduating them all the way to the end. The incubator program is all encompassing. It includes everything from what is branding to how it is to write a business plan. What is it to run a business? What are the things you have to think about? Costs? Pricing structures? How do you package? How do you market yourself?”
The event runs from 4 to 9 p.m. tonight and tomorrow. Guerrero says the GUMA program is a long term project and they hope to announce the next cycle of awardees and participants in the next year.
