Guam – The Econo Mart in NCS Dededo was robbed at gun point last night just after 9 pm. It’s the second armed robbery to occur in a span of just 10 hours. PNC met with store owner Richard Ha today and he showed us the surveillance footage of the robbery and the suspect.
It was just after 9 pm last night when a man walked into the Econo Mart waving around a black handgun and demanding cash. Store owner Richard Ha was at the back of the store training a new employee when he first heard the yelling. He tells PNC what happened next.
“So I walked right here and then I was talking with the stocker and then all of a sudden someone’s yelling, so I looked at the front and then my wife was standing there [being robbed] and then he point the gun at my wife. So I thought he was just playing around so I just tried to walk around and he was yelling at me. And he point the gun at me and he was gonna shoot me. So I said okay, okay, just, okay, and then I went inside the counter and then she gave the money to him and then he fled,” Ha says.
Ha says the suspect got away with about $300 cash.
“But my concern is the next time if he make another plan to come back … so from now on I’m gonna walk outside and then just carry my gun to make sure if somebody wanna really get hurt bad and come back again,” he warns.
The thief was wearing mask around his face, Ha says.
“It happened so quick, so I couldn’t see him well, so I cannot describe really well. But the only thing I remember is he was wearing black pants or dark blue jeans, I’m not sure. The top was a black shirt, with a cover some kind of red or maroon jacket. And then he had a red bandana with white spots, and then the top of it he put a black hat, a cap, and then a jacket was over,” describes Ha.
Just 10 hours earlier the Bank of Guam in Yigo was a held up at gun point by two masked men. One wearing a red ski mask, the other a black mask. Police say both men in the bank robbery also fled on foot. Guam police and the FBI spent much of the afternoon combing the jungle area near the bank of Guam in Yigo. The two suspects remain at large.
Because of the similarities in masked appearances and the timing, PNC asked GPD Spokesman Officer AJ Balajadia if detectives have made any connections between the two robberies. In a text message, Balajadia said, “I’ve released my statement and I have nothing more to add at this time.”
Ha says this is the first time his business has ever been robbed at gun point.
“I run my business almost 20 years and this is the first time. And actually I was not really scared, I was laughing he was really funny for me but I was really worried about my wife because he was pointing the gun at my wife. So good thing everybody is okay,” he says.
If you have any information about these robberies, you’re asked to contact GPD or Guam Crime Stoppers at 477-HELP.
