Guam – Author Dianne Strong will be launching her book today titled “Witness to War: Truk Lagoon’s Master Diver Kimiuo Aisek”.
The book launch and signing is being held at the Mermaid Tavern & Grill in Hagatna from 4 – 10 pm with Pacific Deep Blues playing at 7 pm.
The book is the first ever biography written about a Chuukese. In this case, it’s about the founder of the diving industry in Chuuk State: Mr. Kimiuo Aisek. Strong attempted to depict the world that Kimiuo lived through his eyes as an islander born under the Japanese mandate, a seventeen-year old witness to war, and as the founder of Blue Lagoon Dive Shop.
“Aisek was 17 years old when he witnessed the attack on the islands, the imperial headquarters of the 4th Japanese Naval Fleet. He then opened the first dive shop in all of Micronesia and 40 years later, they’ve just celebrated their anniversary November 13. His family employs more than 130 members and they have an eco-tourism resort there. It’s a world famous dive destination” said Strong.
The book was released in time for the 40th Anniversary of Blue Lagoon Dive Shop in Chuuk, which Aisek found in 1973. Strong said the book is significant to Guam because it’s about our geography and our fellow islanders in Micronesia.
When asked what interested her in writing a book, Strong replied, “I’m a wreck diver and it’s an 80-minute nonstop flight to Chuuk. I’ve been diving there for 40 years doing research. I can finally say I’m a writer because I’ve taught writing at UOG for 18 years. It was a test of ‘practice what you preach’!”
Strong thanks the internet-funding source Kickstart for funding the book and thanks the people Guam for all the support.
“Witness to War: Truk Lagoon’s Master Diver Kimiuo Aisek” will be available for sale at Faith Book Store, Micronesian Divers Association, and both Bestseller outlets at GPO and Micronesia Mall.
