Guam – The Department of Education’s aging infrastructure isn’t limited to Untalan Middle School’s Barrigada campus.
Students and staff at Simon Sanchez High School, Oceanview Middle School, Price Elementary School and many other campuses also deal with problems caused by poor maintenance.
Senator Aline Yamashita is trying to put a stop to DOE’s crisis mode through some of her legislation. Yamashita co-sponsored Public Law 29-31 with Senator Tom Ada authorizing DOE to enter into private-public partnerships to address ongoing problems. Yamashita says similar legislation is what helped the Guam Power Authority end the need for load-shedding years back.
Bill 315 which is currently in committee would also mandate that DOE put together a 10-year Capital Improvement Plan.
