VIDEO: Fidgety Fairy Tales Shines Light on Children’s Mental Health Issues

Guam- A special musical production is being featured this entire weekend in an effort to spread awareness and shine a light on mental health disorders experienced by the island’s young people.

The Hilton Guam Resort is sure to be filled with children dancing and singing tonight [Friday] through Sunday as the cast and crew of “More Fidgety Fairy Tales” performs a retelling of popular fairy tales with a twist. PNC was able to catch a sneak preview of the musical production this week where Director Ernest Ochoco revealed that the play has a unique purpose and message.

“Fidgety Fairy Tales is a musical based on fairy tales that are traditional and made into a new concept to help explain mental health issues that are affecting our youth today,” said Ochoco.

Ochoco says the audience will be treated to the fairy tales of Cinderella, Hansel and Gretal, The Princess and The Pea, The Frog Prince and other acts. He also talks about the most important aspect of this production.

“I think the most important thing you’ll glean from this show is how to deal with mental health issue and how not to ostracize people,” said Ochoco. “Not to make them feel bad. Especially in school, a lot of kids do that just because there’s something different about someone. They tend to make fun of them.”

Through the magic of theater, Fidgety Fairy Tales puts a positive spotlight on how children are portrayed with mental health illnesses and focuses on how to spread community awareness.

“Our aim is to help educate people so that they’ll stop the stigma and stop the bullying and learn to appreciate all kinds of people that are in our community,” said Ochocho.

Ochoco says through these fairy tales, each story builds on skills to deal with people in general and provide more information about the mental health conditions of children.

The play is being produced by Youth Enhancement Support (YES) Inc., I Famagu’on-ta and Green Light Productions, with help from CAHA.

Tickets are available at Bestseller, Faith Bookstore and Carmen’s. A special gala night will also be held at the Hilton Resort on Saturday. Ochoco invites the entire community to support the message behind Fidgety Fairy Tales.

“If you come you’ll really understand how to be more compassionate towards people who have mental health issues and because you’re doing a good deed, you’ll probably get into heaven,” said Ochoco. “So I’d like to see you here and I’d like to see you up there!”
