After a couple of years lying dormant, Marianas Paddlesports Racing Association (MPRA) is pleased to announce the return of the MPRA Galaide Cup.

On Saturday July 27, the white sands of Matapang beach will be a battle ground for local outrigger canoe teams. Close to 200 paddlers and 40 teams will merge on the shores of our tourist district to participate in Race 1 of the 7-race series in the MPRA Galaide Cup.

The Galaide Cup is the longest race series on Guam, with events ranging from 500 meters sprints to a 20-mile long distance race, spread out over 7 different races.

Local teams are preparing for the largest outrigger canoe race in the region, “Micronesian Cup”, hosted this year in Palau. Guam teams would use the Galaide Cup as their training ground in preparation for the regional race.  The last two races of the series will be set up using the same format anticipated in Palau.

Points are awarded based on time per race day. The highest total points of the series will be declared MPRA Galaide Cup Champion.

Race 1 (/7/27/2013): 500 and 1000 meter sprints on a 250 race course.

Race starts at 8am, Matapang beach, Tumon.

The public is invited to watch as teams perform in beast mode and show their skill in the art of outrigger canoeing.
