Guam – The community is joining island leaders in mourning the passing of former Congressman Ben Blaz. While he’s most known for serving as Guam’s representative to Congress, many remember him as the first Chamorro to climb the ranks of any branch of the US Military.

Vicente Tomas Garrido Blaz is most known for serving as a Congressman representing Guam in the House of Representatives in the 1980s.

But many island residents will never forget him for his equally praiseworthy achievement as the first Chamorro to reach the rank of Brigadier General in the US Marine Corp.

Blaz passed away yesterday in Virginia after suffering a recent fall. He was 85 years old. The nephew of the late former Congressman, Mike Borja, announced that masses are being said nightly at 6 pm at the San Juan Bautista Catholic Church in Ordot.

Congressman Blaz will be laid to rest at the Arlington National Cemetery next to his wife, Ann.
