Guam – A team of open heart surgeons is on island to offer their services for Guam patients who may need heart-related procedures done on them.
Led by Cardio Thoracic Surgeon Dr. Noel Concepcion, the Heart Project Team from Modesto, California is on island until the 25th to provide inpatient and outpatient consultations, cardiac catheterizations, stress tests and echocardiograms.
Dr. Concepcion says because of limited resources, a criteria must first be met for patients who may need open heart surgery. Patients are encouraged to speak with their primary doctors to get a referral to GMH for the heart program. Dr. Concepcion says his ideal patients are those who can go home within five days of treatment.
“The one factor that I look at for the ideal candidate is someone that will go home in 5 days,” said Concepcion. “If I think someoboy’s going to be complicated and is going to end up in the ICU for two weeks, we can’t do it because we can’t keep a surgeon here for that long.”
The GMH heart project was created in 2005 and since then there have been 77 open heart surgeries and over 2800 consultations provided at GMH.
