Hagåtña, Guam – Guahan Napu Inc., the local non- profit federation of surfers and body-boarders today announces March 8 as the date for the seventh annual Rickʼs Reef Classic competition. In addition to surfing and body- boarding categories, this yearʼs contest will see stand-up paddle surfing category introduced for the first time. Rickʼs Reef Classic VII is presented by co-sponsors Bud Light and SPPC 76. The event venue is hosted by Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort.
“Weʼre introducing an invitational stand-up paddle surfing competition category this year as a trial event. The competitors are invited based on their skills and experience in open ocean surfing on paddle boards. Stand-up paddle surfing is a new discipline of surfing in terms of competition recognized and promoted by the International Surfing Association,” says Willi Byerly, president, Guahan Napu Inc. “We want to include this discipline in our federation to develop a standard approach and understanding of what is expected from elite performers in SUP.”
Apart from the new SUP surfing category, this yearʼs competition will feature gender neutral Open Long Board surfing, gender neutral Juniors (ages 13 to 17) surfing, gender neutral Open Body-Boarding and gender neutral Open Short Board surfing. Entrance fee is $30 per category. The fee includes one-year association membership and a free commemorative T-shirt in honor of the late Michael Potts, a long–time Guam surfer from the late 1960s and the federationʼs former surf forecaster who passed away in July 2013.
The association is holding a meeting for interested contestants on Thursday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fishermenʼs Co-Op in Hagatna. The meeting is mandatory for SUP surfing contestants. A judging clinic will be held on March 5 prior to the event. The federationʼs vice-president, Gregg Ikehara, is now an ISA-certified Level 2 judge after attending a clinic in Fiji and judging at the recent 2013 Fiji Melanesian Cup. Those who are interested to judge should contact federation president, Willi Byerly at 483-1376.
Additional funding for Rickʼs Reef Classic VII is provided by the generosity of First Hawaiian Bank and JJ Global Services. Prizes for the contest are contributed by Primo Surf Shop, Tumon Bay Lobster and Grill, Lotus Surf, Fokai Industries, DaKine, DNA Evolution and PROA Restaurant. The event is also made possible by the services of Gonzo Ink graphic designs and the Fishermenʼs Co-Op.
