VIDEO: Ruggers Will Kick Up Sand At Jimmy Dees

Barrigada, Guam –  Heineken once again presents the island’s best rugby event in 2014! This will be the 4th installment of Heineken’s Beach Rugby Tournament. The last tournament was in December 2013, which had 20 teams and hundreds of fans attending throughout the weekend. Each co-ed team plays three matches on Day 1, and a minimum of 2 matches on Day 2. If a team makes it to the finals, they can play up to three matches on Day 2 as well.

This is truly a family friendly event! Children are running around the sidelines with a rugby ball or taking a dip into the warm waters at every beach rugby tournament.  While eliminating the tackling aspect of the game, the players also have more fun playing. There are prizes awarded to the team with the best Name and Costume during the tournament.

Creator of the tournament, Matt Sgro, has been extremely happy with the turnout for these tournaments. “My favorite part about these tournaments are that a lot of people who never played rugby in their life, end up participating. The best way to learn rugby is by playing touch rugby. Many people get intimidated when you add tackling into the game, because they are still learning the rules. Touch Rugby teaches you the fundamentals and mindset of how to play this beautiful game. We have several players who started with Beach Rugby and are now participating in the tackle tournaments throughout the year. That was the main goal for creating this tournament. We wanted to grow the sport of rugby while educating our community in the process.”

Heineken’s 4th Beach Rugby Tournament will take place at Jimmy Dees this Saturday from 11am-5:30pm and Sunday from 1pm-5:30pm. Pharm DJ and friends will be playing music all throughout the tournament. There will be a total of 16 teams battling for medals and Heineken prizes! No admission and all ages welcomed to come watch. Bring your paddle boards, beach chairs and sunblock!
