Guam – National Guard and Reserve Members looking for work were able to talk with potential employers during a job fair held at the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort today.
The fair was organized by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) in an attempt to help the 120 unemployed National Guardsmen not on deployment. In addition to providing the guard members with the opportunity to talk with employers today, ESGR has also been assisting them with resume preparations.
ESGR Employment Support Technician Norma Castillon says the point is to help Guard members and Reservists realize how their military experience could translate into more advanced positions than they might realize on their own.
“If they even supervised one or two service members that they’ve already been a supervisor,” Castillon explained. “An employer would actually look at your in a different manner when he looks at your resume and he see that he or she sees that you’ve actually supervised an individual or two.”
ESGR is also working with the Guam National Guard on the Keep Your Guard Up Program to help the 180 unemployed guardsmen and women who will soon be returning from their deployment in Afghanistan. According to Castillon about 30% of Guam’s National Guard Members are unemployed.
