VIDEO: UOG GRADUATES 295 – One of the Largest Graduating Classes in UOG History

Guam – The University of Guam Spring 2013 Commencement Ceremonies were held on Sunday in the UOG Field House.

UOG recognized 295 graduates, one of the largest graduating classes in a single Commencement since UOG established Fall and Spring ceremonies in 1999.  Combined with the graduates from Fall 2012, UOG has 501 graduates for Academic Year 2012-2013, making it one of the largest graduating classes in University history.

Of the Spring 2013 graduates, 77 received graduate degrees and 218 received undergraduate degrees.  The valedictorian of the Spring 2013 graduating class is Gabriel Mendoza Lapid, a Biology major from Barrigada.

The Commencement featured keynote speaker Henry Tan, who received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.  Dr. Tan has the distinction of being the only person who has received his undergraduate, graduate and doctorate from the University of Guam.  He graduated from UOG with a BA in 1976 and earned an MBA in 1980. As the Chief Executive Officer of Luen Thai Holdings, which is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, he oversees businesses which generate over $1 billion a year in sales and employ 42,000 people.

In addition, UOG Senior Vice President, Dr. Helen J.D. Whippy who will be retiring from the University this year, gave a special address to the graduates and University Community.  On display during the ceremony was a 3D Model of the University’s Physical Master Plan which highlights the UOG campus of the future.
