Guam – This is the first incident report of it’s kind for I.I.A.A.G. sports and it is the first time any student athlete has ever been reprimanded for an assault on a sports official.
On Tuesday the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam voted 4-1 that Guam High wrestler Ronicko Cabe will not be able to participate in the All-Island Wrestling Meet and was suspended from 50 of his matches for his aggressive behavior towards referee Joey Lopez, Jr. in a wrestling meet on December 8.
According to the incident report from Marianas Sports Officials Association Commisioner for Wrestling Shawn Gumataotao, Cabe disagreed with Lopez’s scoring decision and was warned by Lopez about raising his voice. The report went on to state that the student “then proceeded to yell and leaned towards Mr. Lopez in an aggressive manner. Mr. Lopez forcibly pushed Cabe away from the mat towards the GW team area while continuing to counsel the GHS wrestler.”
Gumataotao went on to state in his report that he believes “Mr. Lopez had exercised a high level of self discipline, independence and responsibility during this season and this incident in particular.”
The decision of the I.I.A.A.G. board exonorates Joey Lopez, Jr. and he will officiate the All-Island wrestling meet this Saturday at the Father Duenas Phoenix Center.
